Anyone else get excited when they find a new HomeGoods, Marshalls or TJMaxx? These stores are my happy place. I’ve completed the #maxx50 challenge for TJMaxx twice, if that tells you anything. I realize, however, that many people are overwhelmed walking into these big box stores.
I’m here to help with tips on how to shop at HomeGoods, TJMaxx, Marshalls. Let’s face it, you can find some pretty cool stuff for a lot lesss than in other stores. See five tips below that will help you navigate those aisles and leave with a cart full and a wallet that isn’t completely empty!
Tip 1: If you love it, don’t leave it
The golden rule when shopping the big box stores. No exceptions. If you love it, don’t leave it. It will be gone when you come back. Speaking from experience here and the chinioserie mirror I still wish I had put in my cart a few years ago!
In addition, another tip on how to shop at HomeGoods, TJMaxx, Marshalls. Buy holiday merchandise early. Really early. It will be gone by the time you want to use it. Purchase those bunnies (they are on the shelves right now in January) and store until you are ready to pull it out for Easter, etc.
Tip 2: Keep a Running List
Go into the store with an open mind and a running list. If you keep a running list of things you are looking for you won’t be overwhelmed when you go inside. Chances are you won’t find exactly what you need the first time you go, but you will not forget to look for items when you are there. I’m still looking for the perfect white vases for my mantle. I’ll find them soon enough, but until then I will keep them on the list.
Tip 3: Go Finding
Yes, that’s the slogan of HomeGoods and for good reason. Here’s an example. This cute table below. Perfect, but I would need two. Guess what I found on the other side of the store. The matching table. Things are often in pairs but separated on different aisles. This happened on the same day with pillows. You’ve got to go finding, like they say, to get the good stuff.
Tip 4: Look beyond the shelves
Those racks of clothes clogging up the aisles? They are a gold mine. Those are the clothes that have just arrived, meaning all of the available sizes are there. For some of the high end brands, these stores get very limited quantity. Finding those items before they hit the floor is a great way to get the size you need. Not sure what size? Refer back to Tip 1.
The same goes for home goods section. The big carts that look like a hodge podge often have hidden treasures. This mirror was stacked up on a cart among other pieces of art. There were 2 available. I quickly put this in my cart and had people asking where I found it. Hmmm, maybe I should keep that tip a secret!
Tip 5: When to Go?
Avoid these big box stores on the weekend, they are so crowded you can;t really find all of the good stuff. My favorite time to go is at night after 7pm or right when they open is the best time to hit the aisles without interruption. When my kids were little, my husband would usher me out the door for a break every now and them and we both knew exactly where I was headed! It’s just not as relaxing when there are screaming babies in the store and people everywhere-plus you miss the good stuff!
