If you are wondering where to begin when planning a family ski trip to Colorado? This can help! Below is a detailed itinerary from our family’s recent trip out west from where to stay, what to do, and the best bites!
Stay
We opted to rent a VRBO in Silverthorne, and did this because it was centrally located between several ski mountains including Keystone, Breckenridge, Copper, and Vail. We each had our own room, a bonus and the washer and dryer were handy with wet ski clothes. At night we could snuggle in by the fire, make dinner and rest up for the next day.
Do
Of course, there was lots of skiing! My family skiied Vail, Breck (Beaver Run) and Keystone. We scheduled other activities for this family ski trip too. We snowmobiled on day one through an old World War Two camp (to give our bodies time to adjust to the altitude), went extreme snow sledding that led us to the most beautiful mountain view, and I did a guided snowshoe tour with the Breck Nordic Center. Because I’m not a skier, I also scheduled some spa time at the in Sonnenalp Vail while my family hit the slopes. I enjoyed reading by the fire at Gravity Haus in Breck as well.
Bites
Our fav was to eat slopeside. I would take a gondola to meet everyone at lunch time and for Apres ski. We loved Robbie’s in Vail. Fires outsides, lots of people watching and hot toddies to keep warm, what’s not to love? We did try the Crepes a la Cart in Breck. Yummy- yes? Worth the hour wait- not so sure. We had great crepes in the Keystone village too that took 10 minutes and were amazing. We ate in Vail Village as well at Los Amigos, great for kids and post skiing margs, foodies will probably want to skip. There are so many places to choose from, research and reserve ahead of time of you can..
Explore
If you want a break from the slopes during a family ski trip to Colorado, consider exploring small towns nearby. Frisco had the best little shops, we drove to Red Rocks which was the teen’s favorite, and Minturn was a cute town with a few lunch spot options after snowmobiling. We also traveled to Leadville and the Mellanzana shop- by appointment only, and you can only purchase 2 items. The make the sweatshirts while you are there. Very cool little town with the highest mountain peak.
My advice when planning a family ski trip to Colorado is to figure out what is most important. Plan a few things ahead and leave a few things up to chance too. Extreme sledding was a last minute activity to give everyone’s legs a rest, and they loved it. Snowmobiling and eating in an igloo was high on the list so we scheduled in advance. Next year we would love to add dog sledding to the list and explore to find that famous Breck troll!
