Looking back at these kitchen remodel pictures, and I can’t believe we took on this renovation.
A little back story:
We bought this 1960’s house in a neighborhood we had been eyeing for years. Most of the home had not been renovated since then. We refinished floors, took out walls, added fresh paint, transformed wasted space into a mudroom, but none of that compared to the kitchen remodel. The kitchen had not been touched since the 1960’s original build. As it seems to happen often, the kitchen remodel required much more than we originally imagined.
The kitchen required complete demo, take a look at the before picture below.
Hint: That entire wall to the left is now gone! Actually, everything in this picture is completely transformed.
Once we finished the demo(we did part of it ourselves), the experts came in and took down walls, installed concrete support beams, etc. You know, the not fun stuff. Once complete, I was able to put all of the research and pin boards to use and design the kitchen of my dreams. Of course, we had a budget, and we worked hard to stay within those numbers. Below re the top 3 things that we did, that I am still loving 3 years later!
Top 3 Kitchen Remodel Elements:
Waterfall Island and Marble Wall
Waterfall island tops the list. I love the storage underneath, and these Serena and Lily stools are the perfect fit. We also used the same marble for the backsplash around the rest of the kitchen. (Honestly, this was easier than picking out tiles, dealing with yet another list of subs, etc.) Because marble can be a bit high maintenance, we chose a white durable granite on the perimeter countertops which is where we do the prep for cooking. I still love the marble but it has shown signs of use through the years.
Fun Fact: I found this marble by accident. It wasn’t near the rest of the cararra and calcutta options, and luckily the price was nowhere near those either. I happened to walk by it and inquired. I knew it was “The One” instantly because of the lines that would compliment as a backsplash.
(Now attaching the hood to the marble wall, let’s just say that was a heated day between those in charge of that project and VERY tense.)
The Pellet Ice Maker
My friends call it “the good ice.” It is used more than probably any other appliance in the kitchen, besides the refrigerator! This is a similar version of what we have. It’s placed in our coffee bar/bar area. our friends recently had one put in with a custom matching cabinet door and it looks amazing!
Cabinet Drawers
Talk about storage! We opted for the wide, deep kitchen drawers as opposed to traditional cabinets. The drawers make it easy to stack and easy to organize, and they hold a lot! I chose sleek gold handles to keep a simple, clean aesthetic. Peep some of the drawers in the picture below.

I wanted to make some renovations to my kitchen after receiving a big bonus from work. I appreciated it when you talked about how much storage drawers provide as compared to cabinets because I have a lot of kitchenware that I end up using and I’d love to have an easier time handling them all. I’ll be sure to remember your list when I look for a kitchen renovator. Thank you so much for your help!
Congrats on the bonus! Check out my before and after renovation posts. They may be of help to you too!
You made a good point that dividing my the bar between liquor and hot beverages. I’ve always wanted to have a home bar so that I can accommodate guests in a more classy way whether it’s for afternoon tea or a glass of wine after dinner. That will definitely be one of the goals of my next kitchen renovation.
Thanks! I feel like this way you can use the space day and night literally!
Thanks for your helpful kitchen renovations tips! I am planning to do one at home this summer, which is why I’m looking for some inspirations as to how I want my kitchen to turn out. I like that you suggested adding big drawers instead since they carry a lot of kitchenware compared to using a cabinet. Thus, it is much easier to organize the bowls, casseroles, and etc.
I really love my big drawers. They hold all kinds of kitchen things!
I need you!!!!! We are building a house in downtown Columbia on the river and I am in wayyyy over my head!!!! I can always appreciate what some one else does but can not do it for myself!! Your kitchen is beautiful! Well done!!! Now send some design and decorating vibes my way😉
