Spring is here soon, which means it’s time to redo those outdoor planters. There’s a simple formula with planter tips that will help if you weren’t born with a green thumb. (Like me!)
Filler, Spiller, Thriller
Filler: For me, these are your low maintenance plants that can fill the containers, are fairly easy maintenance, and larger in size. I usually choose all green for this, like this macho fern, but your plants can also fill the center with larger flowering like geranium or ornamental grasses. The picture below shows various fillers used in one pot.
Spiller: These are your flowers and plants that trail down the front of the container, and this is where I like to add color and flowers. Some favorites are: creeping jenny, alysium (which I cannot keep alive), sweet potato vines.
Thriller: These are of course my favorite, because this is the place to make a statement! In the picture below, cabbage creates a unique visual. Get the creative juices get flowing with the thriller, and think out of the box. In the fall, I have used pumpkins and you may spot large ornamental Easter eggs in my porch planters too.
Tips from an Expert
Because of my self diagnosed anything but green thumb, I reached out to friend Kim Crane of EarthArt Gardening. She works daily at homes in Charleston and Kiawah making sure their planters are picture perfect!
Some of her tips include:
*Start with a good soil. Jungle Growth is her favorite soil, and it can easily be found at a garden center.
*Read the labels before choosing the plants, like do they need sun or shade? How much water? Also, know where the plants will be placed before purchasing.
*Finally, make sure your container is capable of draining excess water.
Hope this helps gets you planting, and if this Filler, Spiller, Thriller formula works for you make sure to tag me in pictures on Instagram! I would love to see them! Below are links to a few of my favorite outdoor finds!
