Someone once said, “Collect things that you love and your house becomes your story.” Ever wonder how to display collections in your home? When you see this big bowl of shark’s teeth in my house, there are plenty of stories to be told like watching my dad look for them as a kid every summer at Edisto Beach, and teaching my kids how to find them by circling in the sand around them not that long ago.
Collections are what sets a home apart in my opinion, no two are the same and they almost always invoke memories. All of these teeth, big and small, bring back a memory. Someone recently asked me what I planned to do them, and my answer was simple, “I’m leaving them on the coffee table. They tell a story and always spark a conversation.”
There is no set rule on how to display collections, but most designers suggest grouping them together. You will often see antique plates hung on a wall together. I love how Grace Hamlin keeps adding to her oyster plate wall in her Florida home below.
Hotel Bennett in Charleston displayed antique bread boards in their cafe, this would be a great idea in a large kitchen as well. In our home, we collect antique maps of Charleston, and they are all placed in the family room. People love to look closely at the waterways and how the area has changed through the years.
Another popular collection often spotted in the south is staffordshire dogs, like these seen in Meredith Lewis’ home. She states, “I collect so many things and many I started collecting as a child. The one that jumps out at me first is my collection of staffordshire dogs. I have them throughout the house and then have a grouping of them in our living room.”
Designer Nate Berkus says it best, “I believe your home tells a story about who you are and who you aspire to be. We represent ourselves through the things we own. I believe in collecting things that you connect with. We should surround ourselves with things we care about, that have meaning.”
So how about you? What do you collect? Let me know in the comments below!
