Oktoberfest is going on right now, and seeing the pictures takes me back to our family trip to Germany. Munich was one of the stops on our “European Sampler Platter” as we called it. I spent hours researching things to do and see. We explored the city by car, bike and foot.

theCollarfind’s Munich Itinerary

  1. English Gardens. This is the coolest site in the Eisbach area of the gardens. You will find surfers lined up ready to jump in and ride the “standing wave.” No surfboards for us, but my husband and daughter did jump in for a cool (freezing) dip. It was one of the highlight’s of her trip.
Bring a suit and jump in!

2. Bike Tour. This was one of the few official tours we took while in Europe; I highly recommend it. Our guide was from America. The tour opened our eyes to sights we had passed the day before in the car. One interesting thing we learned: Hitler’s office building is now a musical and theater school. The town of Munich refuses to maintain the building, and they are waiting for it to eventually crumble.

We also rode bikes through the beer gardens and stopped at the Chinese Tower, the largest beer garden in the world. It was nice to get a little exercise and history at the same time!

When in Germany….

3. Eat: Lowenbrau We stumbled on this by car and decided to stop. It was one of the best meals of the entire trip. Beer brats, anyone?

Food at a local Beer Garden

4. Stay: Local Village We stayed in the cutest little village outside of Munich, the Pasing district. We walked to the local restaurant, and everyone was so friendly. I highly recommend staying outside of town and living like the locals.

Extra time: The Hills are alive in Austria

With the to do list for Munich checked and a few extra hours of daylight on the last day, we drove across the border to Salzburg, Austria. Just there for a few hours, we explored the Mirabell Palace and Gardens. I wish we could’ve stayed a little longer, but glad we made the trip!

Not everyone was excited to take this Sound of Music picture!

Munich in 2 days with teen girls, it is very fun of you plan ahead and make the most of every minute! More Sampler Platter posts coming up!
